Birds
in my garden
Many
small birds need shelter. I suggest you put up some
nesting boxes in your garden. The size for great tit,
bluetit, tree sparrow and sparrow is inside: 15 x 15 x
30cm. Entrance hole 3,5 – 3,8 cm wide. Put it up in a
tree one or two meters above the ground. Sparrows like
to live under the roof on a house end. Nesting boxes for
starlings and woodpeckers are: 25 x 25 x 50 cm. Entrance
hole 5 cm. Hang it 3 – 5 meters above. Remember that
woodpeckers need a hollow bottom.
Do
not put a stick in front of the hole. It will just be
helpful for a magpie or a squirrel to rob the nest.
If you make nesting boxes for small owls or small birds
of prey the measures are: 35 x 35 x 70 cm. Entrance hole
7 - 8 cm wide. Hang it 5 – 10 meters up. Remember that
they need a hollow bottom.
Starlings and sparrows are social of nature. You can put
more nesting boxes in a small area. The other species
have small territories but do accept other birds inside
their territories.
The birds do appreciate water in the garden.
Put
the nesting boxes up in the winter – remember to
empty them in the autumn. Have fun.
